"The obligation to confess is now relayed through so many different points, is so deeply ingrained in us, that we no longer perceive it as the effect of a power that constrains us."
- Michel Foucault
Jodie Foster, in her Golden Globes speech tonight, relayed Foucault’s argument wonderfully, I think. Her discussion of privacy was both inspiring and intelligent. We are not billboards for others. We do not need to perform our sexualities any more or less than heterosexuals always-already do.
Jodie, thanks for not “coming out” tonight. Thank you for reiterating the importance of intimacy and revealing the intricacies within sexuality that so many, both within and without the LGBT community, often forget or are oblivious to.
